SEO Hosting Company: What the Phrase Is Selling, and What Hosting Actually Touches

An SEO hosting company sells one of two things. Either it sells ordinary web hosting, fast and reliable, described in SEO's vocabulary. Or it sells hosting spread across many separate IP addresses, so that a network of sites can link to each other without looking connected. Neither one is a service done to your pages, which is what SEO is.

Hosting is the computer your website lives on. SEO is the work done to the pages so they show up when somebody searches. This page covers what a host can and cannot change about how your site ranks, and what you can check tonight without buying anything. Capron Media's own site runs on Wix; we do not host anything, and hosting is not something we sell.

A definitions pair, hosting and SEO, as two separate purchases.

What is SEO hosting?

SEO hosting usually means C-class IP hosting: hosting that spreads many websites across many different IP address ranges so they appear unrelated. One of the top results for this search describes its product as hosting that allows you to create links between your own websites. Links made mainly to move rankings are what Google's spam policies call link spam.

The other meaning is ordinary hosting that is fast and stays up, which does matter, because a search engine notices when a page will not load. That is worth paying for. It is a hosting decision, not an SEO service.

Two columns showing the two things the phrase SEO hosting is used to sell.

Does web hosting affect SEO?

Yes, in a narrow way. Web hosting decides how quickly the server answers, whether the site is up when someone visits, and whether the connection is secure. Search engines care about all three. Everything else that decides rankings, from page titles to links between your pages, lives on the page and moves with you to any host.

A host does not decide what your page title says, whether two of your pages compete for the same search, whether your images have text behind them, whether your service pages link to each other, whether Google can find every page, or how large the photos on your home page are.

Which hosting is best for SEO?

No host is best for SEO on its own. A good host for SEO answers quickly, stays up, serves every page over HTTPS, and lets you fix problems when they appear. Beyond that, rankings are decided on your pages. Be wary of a host selling separate IP addresses as a ranking advantage; that is a link-network product.

What if your site is on Wix?

If your site is on Wix, Wix hosts it. There is no separate hosting bill and no other host to move to while it stays a Wix site, so an SEO hosting company is not a purchase open to you. Speed is worked on inside the site: image size, how much loads on a page, and the layout.

If you are on WordPress or something like it, you also choose a host, and a slow one will show in the speed check below. That is a hosting decision. It is not an SEO service, and a company that presents the two as one is asking you to pay for the description.

How can you check your host's share of page speed tonight?

Open Google's free PageSpeed Insights and paste in your home page address. Near the top it separates real-visitor data from a lab test; further down it lists what would make the page faster. Find the item about the first request for the page, which newer reports call document request latency. The server's answer time inside it is your host's share.

On a small site the real-visitor section may say there is not enough data yet; that is normal. The redirects listed beside the server time are the site's, and the compression item is a server setting, which on Wix sits with Wix. Much of the rest of the list (oversized images, scripts that load before the page can show, elements that jump as it loads) is on the page, and yours or your builder's to fix. If an item names code you did not add, it may be the builder's; work the ones you can.

How much should I pay for hosting my website?

Hosting has a published price list on the host's own site, and on Wix it comes with your plan. Pay for a host that is fast and reliable, not one that promises rankings. An SEO service is a separate purchase, with its own price you should be able to read before a call.

A fee with no list attached cannot be compared with any other fee. Ours is on our pricing page, with what is included and, just as useful, what is not.

Is speed part of SEO?

Yes, and the host is one part of speed. The server's response time is the host's share. The weight of the page is the site's share, and on a small business site the photos are the first place to look, because phone photos are often far larger than needed.

Changing hosts to fix a heavy page is like buying a faster van to carry a load you could have halved.

Two cards splitting page speed into the host's share and the site's share.

Should you trust an email saying your site is slow or about to be penalized?

No; settle it yourself. The speed claim takes two minutes with the check above. For the penalty claim, Google publishes its spam policies on what gets a site demoted, and being on one host rather than another is not on the list. A message that leads with fear and ends with a purchase is telling you what it is.

For the record, buying links, link schemes and private blog networks are on the list of tactics we never use, printed on our pricing page.

What continues after the page is fast?

A fast page is a starting condition, not a result. The titles still have to say what each page is for, the pages still have to link to each other, and search engines still have to find the pages you added last month. Hosting is one line in a full SEO audit; what an SEO audit checks covers the rest.

That work does not end when the speed score goes green. What it involves week to week is in our guide to ongoing SEO.

A three-item card of the work that continues after a page is fast.

We do not host anything and we do not sell hosting. We make a fixed number of changes to your own site every week, on whichever host it lives, and the work stays on your pages if you leave, once the month is paid for. What that costs is on our pricing page.

And if you have run the speed check and cannot tell which items on the list are the host's and which are the page's, book a free SEO consultation.
