Wix Speed Optimization: Why Your Wix Site Is Slow, and What Actually Fixes It

Wix speed optimization starts with removing things you added. A slow Wix site is often slow because of what is on its pages: heavy media at the top, apps nobody uses, background video, too many fonts. That is good news, because the things you added are the things you can remove. Wix already handles several speed jobs for you, so this page separates what is yours to fix from what is not.
Why is my Wix site so slow?
A slow Wix site often comes down to what sits on its pages: heavy elements above the fold, installed apps and third-party code, video, too many fonts, and animations. Wix says videos and third-party apps load slower than text and buttons, and that it cannot optimize content served from other companies' servers.

What does Wix already do for your site speed?
Wix handles several speed jobs on its own. It automatically resizes uploaded images, converts them to modern formats such as AVIF where it can, and lazy loads images and videos by default, so they load only as a visitor scrolls to them. Hosting is Wix's too. What Wix cannot control is what you put on the page.
So the old advice to shrink every photo before uploading matters less on Wix than on some other platforms. It still helps to crop very large images and to replace a heavy PNG with a lighter format when you do not need a transparent background, which Wix recommends.

How do you measure Wix site speed?
Measure before you change anything. Wix's Site Speed dashboard shows your site's speed data, Google's free PageSpeed Insights scores any public page, and Search Console's Core Web Vitals report shows how real visits went. Test your busiest pages, not only the home page, and test on a phone using mobile data.
Google's targets for a good experience are three numbers: the largest content on the page loads within 2.5 seconds, the page responds to a tap in under 200 milliseconds, and the layout shifts by less than 0.1.

Your own experience of your site is weak evidence, because your browser may already have stored much of it.
How do I make my Wix website faster?
Work in this order: measure, remove what you do not use, then lighten what visitors see first. Start with apps, video and heavy media near the top of the page, before any settings. Then measure again on the same pages and compare like with like.
Measure on a phone, on mobile data, on your busiest pages.
Remove apps and third-party code you are not actively using. Chat widgets, pop-ups, review displays and social feeds all add code to your pages.
Lighten the top of each page. Wix recommends static elements such as text, shapes and buttons above the fold, and moving video, galleries and heavy effects lower down.
Replace your largest images. Crop very large photos, and use AVIF rather than PNG unless you need a transparent background.
Cut background video, or move it below the fold. A still image is faster and usually reads as well.
Use no more than 3 or 4 fonts, and system fonts where you can, as Wix recommends.
Limit animations and lightboxes, especially at the top of the page.
Use the mobile editor to hide elements that do not help on a phone, and show fewer gallery items there.
Measure again, and compare the same pages rather than a memory.
Does Wix site speed affect SEO?
Speed is part of what Google rewards, but it is one factor among many. Google says: "We highly recommend site owners achieve good Core Web Vitals for success with Search." It adds that this aligns with what its core ranking systems seek to reward. A faster page will not outrank a more useful one on speed alone.

Is a slow Wix editor the same problem as a slow site?
No. A slow editing experience depends on your browser, your computer and the size of the page you are editing. It says nothing about what visitors experience. Do not make decisions about your public site based on how the editor feels to work in; measure the published page instead.
Should you move off Wix to get a faster site?
Not for speed alone. Moving platforms means rebuilding the site, and a rebuild done without care can lose the search positions you already have. Work through the list above first.
