Why Your Wix Site Is Slow, and What Actually Fixes It

A slow Wix site is usually slow for reasons the owner put there, not because of Wix. That is good news, because the things you added are the things you can remove.
This page separates what you control from what you do not, because a great deal of advice on this topic tells you to fix things that are not yours to fix.
Find out what is actually slow first
Do not start changing things. Measure, on a phone, on mobile data rather than your office connection. Your own experience of your site is the least reliable evidence available, because your browser has already cached most of it.
Use a page speed testing tool on your busiest pages, not just the home page, and pay attention to which specific thing the report says is taking the time. It is almost always one of the four below.
1. Images, and this is nearly always the biggest one
Photographs straight from a phone or a camera are enormous, and dropping one into a page uploads all of it. A single unoptimised hero image can outweigh everything else on the page combined.
Resize before uploading. An image displayed at a thousand pixels wide does not need to be five thousand.
Save at a reasonable quality rather than maximum. The difference is usually invisible and the file is a fraction of the size.
Use fewer images. A gallery of thirty photographs on the home page is a decision, and it has a cost.
2. Apps you installed and stopped using
Every app adds code that loads on every page, including apps you tried once and forgot. Chat widgets, popups, review displays, booking tools, social feeds. Open your installed apps and remove anything you are not actively using. This is the highest-return ten minutes available.
3. Video, especially in the background
A background video on a home page is the single most expensive design choice available. It is large, it starts loading immediately, and on a phone it frequently does not play anyway. If you want motion, a still image is faster and usually reads better.
4. Fonts and animations
Each custom font family and weight is a separate download. Three fonts at four weights each is twelve files before any content appears. Heavy scroll animations also delay the point at which the page becomes usable, which is what a visitor experiences as slow.
What is the platform rather than you
Being straight about this, because pretending otherwise wastes people's time.
Wix sites carry a certain amount of platform code regardless of what you build, and you cannot remove it. There is a floor below which a Wix site will not go, and it is higher than a minimal hand-built page.
What that means practically: you can usually take a slow Wix site to respectable. You cannot take it to exceptional. If your site is currently poor, almost all of the available gain is in your own content rather than in the platform, so start there and judge afterwards.
Is the editor being slow the same problem?
No, and people conflate them constantly. A slow editing experience is about your browser, your machine and the size of the page you are editing. It says nothing about what visitors experience. Do not make decisions about your public site based on how the editor feels to work in.
Should you move platform?
Rarely, and not for speed alone. Moving costs you a redesign, and a redesign done without care is the most reliable way to lose the search positions you already have.
If you are considering it, read the redesign mistakes that destroy search rankings first. The speed gain is often smaller than expected and the traffic loss is often larger.
The order to work in
Measure on a phone, on mobile data, on your busiest pages.
Remove unused apps.
Resize and re-save every large image, starting with the home page.
Remove background video.
Cut to two font families at the weights you actually use.
Measure again, and compare like for like rather than to a memory.
